I want Mohun Bagan to win I-League, says former striker Abarowei

New Delhi, India: Former Mohun Bagan and JCT striker Stephen Abarowei, who plied his trade in Indian football in the mid-90s, said that he always wanted his favourite Calcutta club to win the I-League this year.

The I-League title race will go down to the wires on Thursday as four teams including Minerva Punjab FC and Neroca FC all have a chance to win the crown.

“From the start, I had prayed for Bagan, but the chances are slim for them and East Bengal. If Minerva Punjab wins against Churchill Brothers, it will be all over for the Calcutta clubs,” Abarowei told khelupdates.com.

Abarowei, who was part of the victorious JCT team which won the inaugural National Football League (NFL) in 1996-97, belonged to a golden generation of Indian football when the NFL was a top draw since its inception in 1996.

He represented Bagan in 1999-2000 and played a key role in helping them to win the NFL that season and was part of a deadly forwardline that also included Jose Ramirez Barreto, Dusit Chalersman and Igor Shkvirin.

“Playing in Calcutta was a great experience. In fact, if a foreigner don’t play in Calcutta, their Indian sojourn will remain incomplete. Football is like a religion in the city where a youngster to veteran fan worship football. I miss Calcutta very much,” he added.
