AITA Open: Yubrani falls at final hurdle

KOLKATA, India: Bengal’s Yubrani Banerjee failed at the final hurdle after she lost to Shaikh Humeira of Telengana in the women’s singles final at the AITA National Ranking Tournament on Saturday.

Banerjee, seeded third, seemed clueless in the opening set and displayed a series of unforced errors as she lost 1-6.

In the second, the 18-year-old regained confidence to frustrate the hard-hitting Humeira and won the set 6-4. In the decider, both the players held serves till 5-5 but Banerjee dropped serve as Humeira clinched the title 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

"If she concentrates on her fitness and develop hunger to win, Yubrani can excel at the top level," said her Enrico Piperno.

The men’s singles was more of a one-sided affair as India’s No. 8 and top seed Niki Poonacha (Andhra Pradesh) won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 against Dakshineshwar Suresh.

Poonacha was awarded Rs 37,500 and 40 national ranking points.
