JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia: Fahad Al Muwallad netted a brace as Al Ittihad came from behind to romp to a 5-1 victory over Qatar’s Al Rayyan at King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Group B of the 2019 AFC Champions League on Monday.

The two sides wasted no time in getting into the thick of the action, with Khalid Al Samiri shooting wide for Al Ittihad and Lucca Borges seeing his effort saved inside two minutes.

Former Al Ittihad striker Gelmin Rivas embarked on a solo run and cut inside onto his left before shooting low into the arms of goalkeeper Fawaz Al Qarni.

Gonzalo Viera gave Rayyan the lead in the 23rd minute, but the hosts fought back in the added time of first half to shut out the visitors.

First, Fahad Al Muwallad equalized and then Abdulaziz Al Aryani netted the second as Ittihad went into the half-time with a 2-1 lead.

Ziyad Al Sahafi increased the lead three minutes into the second half while Abdulrahman Al Ghamdi converted from the spot.

Al Muwallad added his second as Ittihad completed a rout of their opponents, who defeated Iran’s Saipa 3-1 in the play-off round to qualify, but have lost both their Qatar Stars League games since.

At the other end, the Saudi side are two-time AFC Champions League winners after having lifted the trophy in 2004 and 2005. But they have been less of a force in recent years and exited at the group stage in their last appearance.

Ittihad are enduring a difficult season in the Saudi Pro League and currently sit in the bottom two, but go into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with Al Ahli on Friday. (Source: AFC)
