Almoez Ali tricks Qatar into knockout stage

AL AIN, UAE: Qatar recorded their biggest-ever AFC Asian Cup win when they beat DPR Korea 6-0 here on Sunday.

Almoez Ali, who became the first Qatari to score a hat-trick at the continental competition, is the fifth different player to score four goals in an Asian Cup match and managed this feat earlier in the match than anyone else (60th minute).

The 22-year-old turned provider in the 68th minute when his pass allowed Hassan Akram Afif added the sixth goal against the Koreans, who saw Jong Il Gwan sent off for second bookable offence.

Qatar attempted six shots on target in this match, scoring every one of them. They also stopped DPR Korea from attempting a single shot on target.

A string of yellow cards for Ri Un Chol, Jong Il Gwan and Ri Il Jin suggested DPR Korea were about to lose control, but eventually Kim Yong Jun’s side settled and almost pulled themselves back into the game.

Ri Un Chol tried his luck from outside the area and his right foot drive only narrowly failed to find the top corner.

In another match, 2011 champions Japan also advanced into the next stage with a 1-0 win over Oman after Genki Haraguchi scored the all-important goal in the 28th minute from the spot.
