Anas goal helps Jordan stun defending champions Australia

Al Ain, UAE: Jordan coach Vital Borkelmans hailed his ‘brave boys’ after his side shocked defending champions Australia 1-0 here on Sunday.

Anas Bani-Yaseen’s powerful first-half header punctured the confidence of a youthful Socceroos side who threw everything, but failed to find the equaliser.

“I told them today, ‘God gave you something’, and today they were playing for the people of Jordan,” said Borkelmans.

He praised his players for their outstanding performance.

“They were running like they had three lungs,” added Borkelmans.

The Jordanians targeted Australia’s midfielders Massimo Luongo and Mark Milligan and exploited the space left by their advancing backs.

Australia, who had 76 per cent of possession but only six shots on target, were thwarted by a brilliant double save from Jordan’s Amir Shafi in the dying moments.

The injury-hit Aussies now have a mountain to climb in their next game against Palestine on Friday as they would need a win to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. (Pic courtesy: the-afc.com)
