Bahrain send India packing with injury-time goal

SHARJAH, UAE: India’s dream to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup knockout stage crashed here on Monday night after they lost to Bahrain in their final Group A match from a late penalty conceded in the second half injury time.

Jamal Rashid scores from the spot, with three minutes left to play after Pronay Halder fouled Al Shamsan inside the box.

India needed a draw to advance and they almost achieved that target till Halder committed a blunder that will haunt him for some time as they came close to one of their successful campaigns in the continental competition since 1964 when they finished second.

Bahrain ended the campaign on four points same as Thailand, who held UAE to a 1-1 draw, but the southeast nation qualified on head-to-head criteria since the Thais had defeated Bahrain.

UAE topped the group while India finished last with one win and two defeats.

Stephen Constantine should be praised for taking the team thus far, but psychologically Bahrain pipped India whose back-line succumbed to the pressure in the last couple of minutes.

Bahrain came close to scoring in the 85th minute, but goalkeeper Gurpreet should be thanked for making that smart save when he threw his right hand to deny Yusuf after the latter’s header from a corner seemed to be heading for the back of the net.
