Bayern Munich cut gap at top with 3-1 win over Schalke 04

MUNICH, Germany: Bayern Munich beat Schalke 3-1 on Saturday to cut the gap at the top to five points.

Bayern now have 45 points from 21 matches, five short of Borussia Dortmund, who drew against Hoffenheim earlier on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski pressurised Jeffrey Bruma into an own-goal early, but Ahmed Kutucu leveled the score midway through the first half.

“I’m very happy with the result. We could have scored more, but when you consider that we played 120 minutes midweek, it’s a okay,” said Bayern coach Niko Kovac.

However, Bayern responded almost immediately when the Polish international found the net. Serge Gnabry extended the lead after the restart, and the dominant Bavarians were increasingly content to sit on their lead, but were always closer to netting a fourth.

The champions started with Sven Ulreich at goal and Joshua Kimmich, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and David Alaba in back four.

Thiago and Leon Goretzka featured in a twin holding role behind Gnabry, James and Kingsley Coman, with Lewandowski as lone striker.

Franck Ribery, Javi Martinez and Alphonso Davies took over from Coman, James and Gnabry in the second half.
