Bengaluru FC will be tested in Durand Cup, says Moosa

KOLKATA: Bengaluru FC coach Naushad Moosa exuded confidence ahead of their opening match against Army Red at the 129th Durand Cup here at the Salt Lake Stadium, in Kolkata on Monday.

The Blues, who are fielding their second side, are making their second appearance in the competition after 2014. But they have named seven first-team players in the squad including Aditya Patra, Parag Shrivas, Gursimrat Singh Gill, Sairuat Kima, Ajay Chhetri, Suresh Wangjam and Edmund Lalrindika.

“The boys are well aware of the opportunity. They’ve got to perform at this level, and with a team like East Bengal in our group they will be tested thoroughly. It’s great to play in this competition at the beginning of the season where I can test my team’s strength,” Moosa said on the club’s website.

The Army side lost to East Bengal 2-0 on Saturday and it will be a must-win game for the servicemen.

“We’ve an eight-day gap after our first game. It’s important to get a positive result in the opener. Army Red suffered a tough loss against East Bengal. They’ll be looking to bounce back. We need to be alert and give our best,” added the former India international.

At the other end, Army Red will miss goalkeeper M Shanoos who was sent off in the Group A opener against East Bengal.

The kick-off is at 3pm on Monday.
