CALCUTTA, India: Subhash Bhowmick, nicknamed ‘Bhombolda’, is back at East Bengal after nine years, but this time in Technical Director’s role.

“It’s a good feeling to be back at the club where I had started my career as a player and later as coach. I’m honoured. I thank the management for the faith they have reposed in me,” Bhowmick told at a Press conference here on Tuesday.

East Bengal had finished fourth in the I-League behind Minerva Punjab, Neroca FC and Mohun Bagan.

The team’s dismal result had prompted the club to hire Bhowmick, who will share coaching duties with coach Khalid Jamil.

According to sources, East Bengal weren’t keen to extend Khalid’s contract and hired Bhowmick to put pressure on the former India midfielder.

“East Bengal is going through a difficult phase. But this is nothing new as I’ve had faced such situations as a coach in the past. We must overcome this hurdle and help built a strong squad for the Super Cup,” added the feisty coach, who also had stints at Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting, Churchill Brothers and Salgaocar.

Meanwhile, Monoranjan Bhattacharya, who wasn’t too happy to continue, has resigned from the TD post following the team’s unimpressive show in the league.

While the club had wanted Khalid to resign on his own, the former Aizawl FC coach continued with the training sessions after the league got over last week.

“Mr Bhowmick is a renowned coach. It’ll be a good experience for me to have him around,” said the 40-year-old.

East Bengal are scheduled to play Qualifier 3 on April 5 in the Super Cup.

“Khalid has done well with the team. He loves to take challenge like me. We will work together for the team’s success,” said Bhowmick.
