NEW DELHI: India U-16 coach Bibiano Fernandes said he was with his team’s self-belief and determination which helped them win couple of important matches at the West Asia Football Federation’s U-16 Championship in Amman, Jordan.

“We have now learnt how to come back and win games, especially after a defeat. The team has developed self-confidence and the urge to fight back,” Bibiano said.

India finished with nine points from four matches in the tournament.

“We had been conceding late goals in our previous matches in China, Thailand and Malaysia. The team was pushing hard for a winner in the dying stages, but this time we converted our chances,” he added.

The Indians conceded two from four and maintained clean sheets in the other three.

“But there is always a room for improvement and we still have a lot of work to do,” said Bibiano.

The Goanese is also aware of the fact when they play in AFC U16 Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, next month, things will not be that easy.

The 16 teams have been divided into four groups with the top two from each group advancing to the quarterfinals.

India has been clubbed with Iran, Vietnam and Indonesia in Group C. The four semifinalists get a direct ticket to the next edition of the FIFA 2019 U-17 World Cup.

“The biggest challenge now is to keep the team focused and hungry for success,” he added.
