Cavani doubtful starter for quarterfinal against France

Cavani doubtful starter for quarterfinal against France

MOSCOW: Uruguay Edison Cavani is a doubtful starter for his team’s quarterfinal against France today.

The Paris-Saint Germain forward remains the big question mark for the Latin Americans.

The 31-year-old scored both goals in his team’s last-16 2-1 win over Portugal before limping off with some 20 minutes remaining.

But Cavani will be sorely missed if he fails to recover recovering from a calf muscle problem and, in case, fails to play, Girona forward Cristhian Stuani is likely to take his place in the starting line-up.

However, Uruguayan Football Association president Wilmar Valdez told Uruguay's Ocean FM radio that Cavani was “not ruled out” of the match and was making progress.

“His fitness for the game will be decided on Friday,” said Valdez.

Meanwhile, France coach Didier Deschamps said Uruguay had alternatives such as Cristian Rodriquez and Stuani, who would give La Celeste different options without compromising their style.

“I am preparing my team for Cavani playing but, whether he plays or not, I will only know an hour and a half before the game,” said Deschamps. “Tabarez has other options, and I have also prepared my team with different options in mind. If he is not there it is not going to change Uruguay’s profile.”

Deschamps lost in the quarterfinals at the last World Cup in Brazil, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Germany.

Asked what will be different tomorrow, he said: “In 2014, it was another adversary, and another France team. What's important is to maintain a high level. A quarterfinal in 2014, a final at Euro 2016, and now a quarterfinal again. My team is competitive, that's what it looks like to me.”
