Chennai City win maiden I-League; East Bengal finish 2nd

NEW DELHI: Assam’s 20-year-old Gaurav Bora struck a brace as Chennai City fought back from a goal down to beat Minerva Punjab 3-1 and won the 12th I-League crown on the tournament’s final day in Coimbatore on Saturday.

Roland Bilala had handed Minerva Punjab a shock lead in the third minute, but Pedro Manzi converted from the spot to equalize.

Bora then scored (69' and 90+3') to seal the title for the Akbar Nawas-coached side.

Meanwhile, East Bengal finished second after beating Gokulam Kerala FC 2-1 in Kozhikode. Needing a win to claim the title and also hoping that Chennai drop points, the Kolkata side, however, had to be contended with the second-place finish in the 10-team competition.

With the country set to have one league from next season, it was East Bengal’s last opportunity to win the I-League, which was started in 2007-08.

The red and gold brigade too also trailed by a Marcus Joseph goal scored in the 69th, but the visitors were in top of their form to bounce back into the match -- Jaime Santos equalized 10 minutes later while captain Lalrindika Ralte sealed the win in the 85th. (Pic: Chennai City/Twitter)
