Chhetri double guides India to 4-1 win over Thailand

ABU DHABI, UAE: Sunil Chhetri led the way with a double as India opened their AFC Asian Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Thailand in a Group A game here on Sunday evening.

Chhetri opened the scoring from the spot in the 27th minute before Thailand equalised through Teerasil Dangda six minutes later.

The Indian captain, who was top-scorer for his side with two goals in their last edition eight years ago in Doha, helped his side regain the lead in the 46th.

Anirudh Thapa added the third in the 68th minute while Jeje Lalpekhlua completed the tally just two minutes after coming on.

"It feels good to win this match. It’s a tough pool and all the teams are more epxerienced. The way the boys fought, showed character. We fought hard and will keep fighting till the end," said Chhetri.

India showed a lot of promise and if they maintain this form against Bahrain and UAE, coach Stephen Constantine could well be on Cloud Nine.

However, given India’s poor run of form against the physically-strong West Asian sides in the past, Constantine would need to draw up a strategy that can shut out UAE and Bahrain, whom they lost 5-2 in 2011 edition in Qatar. (Pic courtesy: the-afc.com)
