Chhetri tricks India to 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei

MUMBAI: Bolstered by a hat-trick from Indian captain Sunil Chhetri, the hosts started off their campaign at the four-nation Intercontinental Cup with a 5-0 win over Chinese Taipei here on Friday.

Udanta Singh and Pronoy Halder were the other scorers as India dominated in terms of possession and execution against their hapless opponents at the Mumbai Football Arena.

It was a one-side performance by India, who are preparing for next year’s Asian Cup in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Chhetri, who played in his 99th match in national colours, scored in the 14, 34 and 60th minutes respectively while Singh found the target in the 48th and Halder in 78th.

India coach Stephen Constantine handed debuts to Subhashish Bose and second half substitutes Ashique Kuruniyan and Alen Deory, who replaced Halicharan Narzary and Sunil Chhetri respectively.

The hosts will take on Kenya on Monday.
