Defending champions Germany aim for history in Russia

MOSCOW: No country other than Brazil has defended their World Cup title, but Germany are eyeing to match the Latin American’s enviable record.

The 2014 champions landed here on Tuesday to attempt to successfully defend the World Cup title and become the first team in 56 years to retain the crown.

Brazil successfully defended their 1958 triumph four years later in Chile.

“We want to write history,” Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos told the media.

The Germans are also hoping to see their captain Manuel Neuer in action after the goalkeeper returned following eight months on the side lines with a foot fracture.

The Germans, who defeated Argentina in the final four years ago, know they are the team to beat in Russia and head coach Joachim Loew said their rivals had all made advances.

“There will be a high standard of opposition. Spain have improved, while Brazil and Argentina are up there,” said Loew.

Germany have won just one of their last six friendlies, but the focus is on their opening game against Mexico on Sunday.
