Documentary on East Bengal to mark centenary celebrations

KOLKATA: A documentary on East Bengal by acclaimed filmmaker Goutam Ghose will mark the iconic club's centenary celebrations, starting from August 1.

The documentary will mostly throw light on the club’s footballing glory since its inception in 1920. Besides, the film will also put an emphasis on the role that the club played in fighting the parochial outlook of the society and how it struggled to be part of the country, serving as a ray of hope for thousands of refugees who came from the erstwhile East Pakistan (Bangladesh).

The club’s memorable 1953 Europe tour that saw the Red and Gold Brigade play Dynamo Kiev is also included in the documentary. East Bengal were invited by the Romania Youth Festival Committee to take part in the tournament in Bucharest.

Club’s fiercest rivals -- Mohun Bagan -- will also find more than a mere mention in the documentary.

Meanwhile, If sources are to be believed, the club is also in talks to bring former Iran international Majid Bishkar, hailed as one of the finest foreigners to have plied his trade in India.
