Durand Cup: Mohammedan were pushovers in 2013, says Soren

KOLKATA: One of the key members of the Mohammedan Sporting club that lifted the 2013 Durand Cup – their first title after 73 years -- Anthony Soren said the club can advance into the knockout phase.

The world’s third-oldest football tournament begins here from Friday.

Soren, who scored in the finals and semifinals in 2013 edition, drew a similarity between the current squad and the one which won the coveted title by beating ONGC 2-1 six years ago in Delhi.

“Mohammedan Sporting always do well in cup competitions. They also have positive results against East Bengal and Mohun Bagan in recent years,” said Soren.

The current team is managed by former Mohun Bagan player and coach Subrata Bhattacharya.

“Nobody gave us a chance in 2013. There were players like Dipendu Biswas, Ashim Biswas, Tolgay Ozbey, Penn Orji and Luciano Sabrosa, but others were playing in their first Durand. This year’s team also have a similar kind of squad coached by Bhattacharya. We also had then the inspirational Moshood Bola Abdul Aziz. I’m hopeful for a good result,” added the 31-year-old.

Mohammedan are with Mohun Bagan, Indian Navy and ATK in Group B.

“It an interesting group. Bagan is the most balanced side, but we must not forget it will be season-opener for them as well.

They’ll have to deal with nearly the same amount of pressure as Mohammedan do. I don’t know whether ATK will field their first-team, but one thing I can surely say that they will pose some serious threat to other teams,” said Soren.
