East Bengal celebrate 99th Foundation Day

KOLKATA: Defending champions East Bengal, who will begin their campaign in the Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division on Friday, celebrated their 99th Foundation Day at their club tent here on Wednesday.

The club, which was founded in 1920, has planned to line up several programmes from next year to make its centenary while a documentary by eminent film-maker Goutam Ghosh is also in the pipeline.

One of the most popular fan-based clubs in the country, East Bengal also presented India’s hockey legend and Olympian Gurbux Singh with Bharat Gaurav award while Sushil (Laltu) Bhattacharya and Surajit Sengupta were jointly honoured with the Lifetime Achievement.

Meanwhile, Syrian midfielder Mahmoud Al Amna has been adjudged the best player of the 2017-2018 season. The club announced two awards for junior players. Under-18 players Manoj Mohammad and PC Rohlupuia have been picked for the awards.

Quess Corp, a business services provider, has recently mopped up a 70 per cent stake in the club for an initial investment of Rs 10 crore.
