East Bengal fight back to beat Neroca 2-1

KOLKATA: East Bengal played with grit and determination to pull off a remarkable 2-1 victory after they trailed by a third-minute goal against Neroca FC in the I-League here on Thursday.

Mexico international Enrique Esqueda, who came in as a subsititute in the second half, scored a double to cancel out Chencho Gyeltshen’s third-minute strike and helped the red and gold brigade stay in the title race.

“Focusing on each match will be out target,” said East Bengal’s Spanish coach Alejandro Garcia.

In fact, Alejandro’s idea to replace Toni Dovale with Esqueda paid off nicely as the Mexican headed home the equalizer in 67th minute after Borja picked him up with a nice cross.

Enrique then fired home the winner after he met with a cross from Samad Ali Mallick in the 87th minute to spark off celebrations.

East Bengal are fourth with 28 points from 14 matches but they have played two matches less table-toppers Real Kashmir (32 points) and Churchill Brothers (29), who occupy third-place.

Chennai City have 30 from 14 matches and are currently second on the table.

Neroca remained fifth with 25 points from 16 games.
