East Bengal fight back to hold Bagan 2-2 in city derby

KOLKATA: The season’s first derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal ended in a 2-2 draw here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Bagan showed their attacking prowess with relatively unknown Pintu Mahato scoring the opening goal following a cross from the far post and fires a first time instep shot in the 20th minute.

The green and maroon side added their second after Henry Kisekka unleashed a ferocious drive in the 10 minutes later.

Kisekka was the man to watch out for and he delivered in fine fashion. He received the ball from the right, controlled and picked his spot to double his side’s lead.

Right back Arijit Bagui, who joined from a lesser known side Kalighat MS, made the assist on both occasions.

But Costa Rican World-Cupper Johnny Acosta found the back of the net to bring East Bengal back into the match when he headed home in the first-half added time (47th minute).

Laldanmawia Ralte restored parity in the 62nd minute as East Bengal regained confidence and composure to stave off a defeat against their traditional rivals.

In fact, Acosta’s goal was the turning point of the game as the Costa Rican international pressed hard and won that goal on his own accord. The goal spurred on the EB players which helped them put up a much better display in the second half.
