East Bengal hold Churchill Brothers to jump to second spot

KOLKATA: East Bengal fought back a goal down to hold Churchill Brothers 1-1 in I-League here on Sunday.

Willis Plaza had put the visitors in the lead in 69th minute capitalizing on a miscommunication between Rakshit Dagar and Borja.

But Kassim Aidara restored parity nine minutes later with a firm header following a free-kick by man of the match Lalrindika Ralte.

The hosts retained the winning combination that drubbed Shillong Lajong 5-0 in the previous match while the Goan side started with Ivorian forward Christian Remi in place of Dawda Ceesay, who was ruled out for the season due to injury.

East Bengal are now joint second on 32 points (from 16 games) with Real Kashmir. But the former are ahead due to a better goal difference. Meanwhile, Chennai City FC, who play Shillong Lajong on Monday, lead the table with 34 points from same number of matches.

The game started with East Bengal pressing hard from the first minute, but Churchill Brothers kept their defence compact enough to not allow the Red and Gold brigade any clear opportunities to score.
