East Bengal stay in title race with 2-0 win over Bagan

KOLKATA: East Bengal overcame traditional rivals Mohun Bagan 2-0 in their crucial I-League match here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday evening.

This was also the first time that red and gold brigade has won both the derbies in 15 years.

Jaime Santos Colado scored the opening goal in the 35th minute after he was put through by Jobby Justin, who headed home a Lalrindika Ralte corner in the 75th.

With this victory, East Bengal are now level with Real Kashmir on 25 points but they will remain in the fourth spot due to its inferior goal difference.

Mohun Bagan, who were let down by their leaky back-line, remained sixth on 21 points.

Though they had an opportunity to equalize, when Dipanda Dicka’s effort was disallowed in the 52nd after Darren Caldeira was ruled offside though TV replays showed he was very much within the frame.

But Khalid Jamil’s side should be blamed for wasting most of their set-pieces in the opening half. The corners were hardly used while Sony Norde’s freekicks lacked fire and penetration.

East Bengal were a shade better and looked threatening in the opening 10 minutes as Bagan made a cautious start though Dicka had the first shot of the game but failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Five minutes later it was East Bengal’s turn to prove that they were ready to pile pressure on their opponents when skipper Laldanmawia Ralte combined well with Antonio Dovale and gets a shot off but it lacked punch.

Goalless at the half hour mark, East Bengal found the breakthrough when Justin played down the right and cleverly squared the ball for Jaime who drilled the ball home to kick-off a celebration.
