Furyk hints at including Woods in US Ryder Cup squad

NEW DELHI: US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk unveiled the first eight members of his squad on Monday, with the potential of a captain's pick remaining to add Tiger Woods to the lineup.

Furyk will pick four other players next month and Woods, despite spinal fusion surgery last year, is now 11th in the standings, said, 'I'm just pleased with what I've done so far, and now to be part of the Ryder Cup conversation, from where I've come to now, it's been pretty cool."

Woods figured in the world's top 30 rankings on Monday for the first time since 2014 on the back of his exploits at the PGA Championship.

He conjured up his lowest-ever final round in a major, a six under par 64, on Sunday to finish second to Brooks Koepka.

Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Webb Simpson and Rickie Fowler are already named members from US qualifying.

Four others who previously clinched positions were top-ranked Dustin Johnson, reigning Masters champion Patrick Reed, third-ranked 2017 PGA winner Justin Thomas and second-ranked Brooks Koepka, this year's PGA Championship and US Open winner.

Furyk will make four captain's picks in early September, potentially including Woods, before the Americans defend the trophy against Europe at Le Golf National near Paris on September 28-30.
