German legend Klose heaps praise on Asian champions Qatar

DOHA: German legend Miroslav Klose, who is guiding the Bayern Munich U17 ship at the Al Kass International Cup, congratulated Qatar on winning the AFC Asian Cup last week.

“Qatar is nice. I’ve been here several times. The Asian Cup win is great for the people since the country will be hosting the next World Cup here. It’s a huge success,” said Klose, who is the leading scorer with 16 goals in the history of World Cup.

Klose netted five at each of his first two appearances in the sport’s showpiece event in 2002 and 2006. He won the Golden Boot at home when Germany hosted the event in 2006. He then added four more at the 2010 in South Africa before overtaking Brazil legend Ronaldo’s record of 15 goals four years later.

“A good development plan on the youth set-up at the Aspire Academy has reaped rich rewards. At Aspire, you have the possibilities to train and practice certain things with good people,” said Klose, who side lost 3-2 to Etoile Sportive Du Sahe on Tuesday.

He praised a lot on the quality of the tournament, which also has several top clubs like Real Madrid, Spartak Moscow and PSG.

“The tournament is being shown on TV. It’s certainly something special for the local community. However, we see it more as a training camp. We have come here with quite a few very young players, so our main objective was to simply play football,” said Germany’s all-time top-scorer with 71 goals in 137 appearances.
