Griezmann shines as Atletico win Europa Cup after six years

LYON, France: Antoine Griezmann turned out to be the hero for Atletico Madrid as he struck twice to help the Spanish side claim their third Europa League triumph in nine years with a 3-0 victory over Marseille in the final on Wednesday night.

Atletico, who also won the competition in 2010 and 2012, took control as Griezmann scored in either half before Gabi's late third ended Marseille's hopes of becoming the first French team to win a European trophy for 22 years.

Griezmann -- brought up in Macon, just 70 kilometres from Lyon -- scored once in each half, his lethal finishes coming either side.

Earlier, Marseille captain Dimitri Payet was taken off injured in the first half while his side trail 1-0 at the time to Griezmann's goal.

Payet had been considered a doubt coming into the match with a hamstring problem that prevented him from playing in Marseille's last league game against Guingamp last Friday.

Diego Simeone served a touchline ban here as assistant German 'Mono' Burgos took charge.

Atletico were the favourites against a Marseille side whose continental campaign had begun in the the third qualifying round last July.
