Happy to be playing 100th match for country, says Chhetri

MUMBAI: Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri will complete a milestone on the morrow when he plays his 100th match for the country when the hosts take on Kenya at the Intercontinental Cup here on Sunday.

“It was unbelievable, a surreal feeling when Sukhi sir (Sukhwinder Singh) announced the team at the breakfast table on the match day,” recalled Chhetri on his maiden match in 2005.

Chhetri, who has 59 international goals, played his first game for the Indian senior team against Pakistan in a friendly in Islamabad in 2005.

“’Did I ever think I will play 100 games then? No’. Yes, there was a dream. Today, I feel, it’s something beyond my dream as I will be the only second player in the history of the country to play a century of matches,” added the Indian captain, who scored a hat-trick in the opening match against Chinese Taipei on Friday.

“Sukhi sir had a thing of announcing the team on the match day at the morning breakfast. It was a surprise as I was just a 20-year-old. It was a proud moment for me,” said Chhetri, who also had stints under Singh at the defunct JCT in Phagwara.
