ICC World Cup: Fit-again Hazlewood unsure of a place in Aussie squad

NEW DELHI: Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood may be fit, but he’s not yet sure to seal a place in the 15-man squad for the 2019 ICC World Cup in England and Wales.

He has been sidelined with a back problem since the One-day internationals against India in Australia while Jhye Richardson, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Kane Richardson and Jason Behrendorff have impressed the selectors in his absence.

“I’ve started bowling, I’m off a couple of steps at the moment, so that will start to ramp up pretty quickly through late April and in to May” – but there is talk that he will be excluded from the World Cup to save him for the Ashes that starts in August,” Hazlewood told Cricket Unfiltered podcast.

The Aussies won the ODI series in India and against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates.

However, the selectors are in a fix as the April 23 deadline approachees with David Warner and Steve Smith also seemed to be in impressive forms.

“There’s probably 20-plus guys who think they’re a really good chance of making it. It’s a good position to be in for Australian cricket,” added Hazlewood.

The defending champions will begin their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan on June 1.
