‘Ice cool’ Hallgrimsson unveiled as Al Arabi coach

DOHA, Qatar: Heimer Hallgrimsson is not on any mission, but the former Iceland coach said that he was surprised to be in the Gulf after taking up a job with struggling Qatari side Al Arabi.

The 51-year-old was unveiled as the coach by Arabi, who hoped to revive their glory days under him.

“I had some opportunities, some discussions with clubs but nothing that was more interesting than this one,” said Hallgrimsson, who guided his country to their maiden FIFA World Cup in June this year.  “This is a big challenge for a club that had multiple success in the past and would like to have regain that glory again.”

Hallgrimsson was in talks with Bundesliga and Major League Soccer sides Stuttgart and Vancouver Whitecaps before being approached by Arabi, but had no regrets about choosing a team from the World Cup 2022 host nation after signing one-and-half-year contract.

The Icelander is the club’s eighteenth coach since 2010 while they languish at the mid-table in the 12-team Qatar Stars League.

The club have shown some improvement by winning their last two matches including an impressive 3-0 victory against Umm Salal, but Hallgrimsson will have plenty of time to chalk out plan for more better results as the league will take a break for the Asian Cup in the UAE and will restart only in February.
