India U23 camp for AFC qualifiers kicks off under new coach

PANJIM, Goa: Newly-appointed India’s U23 coach Derrick Pereira conducted his first training session at the national camp at the Tilak Maidan here on Sunday.

India is preparing for the upcoming 2020 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from March 22.

38 probables have been named, but 19 have joined so far as the rest are busy with their club duties.

Eight players from India’s U17 World Cup team have also been called up besides 11 from India Arrows team will also join.

“It is important to get all the players together,” said Pereira. “All the boys are coming back at the end of a long season. Ashique (Kuruniyan), Jerry (Lalrinzuala), Hitesh (Sharma) are ruled out. All of them will be badly missed.”

Nishu Kumar, Anirudh Thapa, Mohammad Nawaz and Sairuatkima haven’t been able to join this camp owing to their club commitments while Ashique Kuruniyan, Sahil Panwar and Jerry Lalrinzuala have been ruled out courtesy injuries and Hitesh Sharma is suffering from chicken pox.
