NEW DELHI: Newly-appointed India U23 coach Derrick Pereira praised the former coach Stephen Constantine’s “building the team for future” philosophy.

“We should follow to go one step up. Our youngsters are talented, but they need proper exposure against tougher teams. There must be a long-term plan for the future,” said Pereira, who is currently preparing the side for AFC U-23 Championship 2020 qualifiers.

Besides Anirudh Thapa, who scored a sublime goal against Thailand, Vinit Rai and Sarthak Golui were also part of the 23-member squad that played in the AFC Asian Cup in January.

“The senior team gelled well because they share an understanding. It takes time but we need to focus on that. We’ve to give them time and believe in the players,” added Pereira, who had earlier coached Pune FC, Vasco and Mahindra United.

Along with assistant coach Venkatesh Shanmugam, the 56-year-old is now focused on finding the right combination before the Asian U23 qualifiers in Taskhent, Uzbekistan.

“We’ve need to finalise the final squad and then frame the starting XI. We have to improve tactically as well as technically. We want to adapt a style that’ll help the players develop further and get best possible results,” said Pereira.

India will lock horns with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in the Group F of the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers between March 22 and 24.

“I’m feeling privileged to be involved with the national team. It’s a great honour for me. I’ve always accepted new challenges. I’ll take this on as well,” said Pereira. (Pic credit: AIFF)
