India U23 team hope to use Qatar friendly for AFC Qualifiers

DOHA, Qatar: India’s U-23 national team will lock horns with reigning AFC Asian Cup champions Qatar at the Aspire Academy ground here on Monday.

The match is part of Indian team’s preparation for the AFC U-23 Qualifiers in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) from March 22.

India has been clubbed with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

“The match will provide us the opportunity to get a fair idea of where we stand. The focus will be more on finding the right combinations and style of play,” said India U23 coach Derrick Pereira.

The 23-member team, which concluded a five-day preparatory camp in Goa, feature 11 players from AIFF's developmental side -- Indian Arrows, who recently participated in the I-League and even beat top side Mohun Bagan.

Pereira, who had earlier coached Pune FC and Mahindra United, is focusing on improving the fitness level of the players.

“Fitness is one part that carries paramount importance in modern football. We have to sustain 90 minutes on the pitch, both on the attacking and the defensive front,” he added. “The match will help the juniors the right exposure as Qatar U23 squad will have some of their players who had played in the AFC Asian Cup in January.”
