India beat Maldives to advance into SAFF Cup semis

NEW DELHI: India advanced into the SAFF Cup semifinals after they beat Maldives 2-0 in their last Group B game at the Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.

Two first-half goals from Nikhil Poojary and Manvir Singh saw the defending champions set up a clash with Pakistan in the last-four while Maldives meet Nepal in the other semis.

India topped the group, but Maldives also advanced to the last four after a coin toss was needed to determine the second side between them and Sri Lanka.

“It was a very difficult first half. We didn’t get going in the first 20-25 minutes. We need to start quicker. But we have some really good young players coming through, and we got the goals we deserved,” said coach Constantine.

India fielded their U-23 squad, but Maldives coach Petar Segrt said they conceded easy goals.

“We tried to attack in the second half, but it didn’t help much. India is a fantastic team and I accept the result,” said Segrt.

Nepal, Pakistan qualify

Bangladesh left a lot to be desired after they lost to Nepal 2-0 in their final Group A match.

The victory meant Nepal topped the group with Pakistan, who defeated Bhutan, finished second to also advance to the last four stage.
