India crash out of AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers

NEW DELHI: India crashed out of the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers with a 2-0 defeat to Tajikistan in their second match of the Group F in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Sunday.

Daler Yodgorov (30th minute) and Solehov Sharafjon (85’) scored for the winners.

The opponents had mounted a barrage of attacks in the early minutes of the match, trying to unsettle the Indian defence but some astute goalkeeping by Dheeraj Singh kept them at bay. In the 10th minute, the custodian made a fine save to deny the opponents an early breakthrough.

India, who lost to Uzbekistan in their opening match, could have surged ahead into lead in the 12th minute, but Sarthak Golui’s header off a Komal Thatal free-kick missed the target.

After a nervy start, the Indian team regained confidence. In the 27th, Rahim Ali found Komal Thatal inside the box. With defenders closing in, Komal could only lobbed the ball over the woodwork.

But India’s attacking momentum was short-lived as Tajikistan took the lead with Yodgorov finding the back of the net.

Desperate for the equaliser, Rahim Ali went on a run down the middle and found Anirudh Thapa but his shot was cleared by the back-line.
