India get tough group in AFC 2019 Asian Cup

DUBAI, UAE: India have been clubbed with hosts United Arab Emirates, Thailand and Bahrain in Group A of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 following the official draw ceremony here at the iconic Burj Khalifa on Friday.

Defending champions Australia is in Group B with Syria, Palestine and Jordan.

Saudi Arabia, who will be seen at this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia, Qatar, Lebanon and North Korea are in Group E.

“Thailand are an improved side and they have shown their strength in the qualifiers and the recent King's Cup. They will be a difficult opponent,” said UAE coach Alberto Zaccheroni.

UAE and Bahrain will meet in the tournament’s opening game on January 5 while India take on Thailand on the very next day at the Al Nahyan Stadium, Abu Dhabi.

In their second group game, India will meet the hosts at the Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi, on January 10.

In their final group clash, they face Bahrain at the Sharjah Stadium on January 14.
