India gets tough group in AFC U-16 Championship

KUALALUMPUR, Malaysia: India is placed in a difficult Group C which also has 2016 runners-up Iran, Indonesia and Vietnam after the draws for the AFC U-16 Championship was held here on Thursday.

The tournament will be held here from September 20-October 7.

Qualifying for the AFC U-16 Championship will mean a berth in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Peru in 2019.

Group B will see two-time champions DPR Korea alongside Oman, Yemen and Jordan.

Two-time champions Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Tajikistan comprise Group A.

Iraq will face Australia, Afghanistan and Korea Republic in Group D.

Indonesia too are not daunted by the draw with coach Fakhri Husaini also targeting a top-four finish.

“At the age group level, all teams are of equal standard and we must work hard to achieve the target,” said Husaini.

“The most important thing is that the players must focus in each match and show their best capabilities and skills,” he said in a statement issued by the Football Association of Indonesia.
