India go down to Chinese Taipei in Asian Games handball

JAKARTA: The Chinese Taipei men's handball team defeated India 38-28 in a Group D qualifying match at the Popki Sports Hall in Cibubur on Monday.

Chinese Taipei captain Chiu Yifan was the joint top-scorer notching eight goals with India’s Harender Singh, who also bagged eight out of 13 shots on target.

The victory put Chinese Taipei, who made their third appearance in handball competition, as group leader.

The team, coached by Yu Tekuei, finished eighth at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, after losing at the group stage.

India’s men's handball team was ranked 14th in the previous edition while it ranked 12th at the 2018 Asian Men's Handball Championship in Suwon, South Korea.

Meanwhile, Bahrain, who finished second in 2014, 2016 and 2018 Asian Men's Handball Championships, will, however, remain a serious challenger for Qatar here. Bahrain came third at the Incheon Games.

Bahrain is in Group D along with Chinese Taipei, India and Iraq while Qatar is in Group A along with Iran and Malaysia.
