India open campaign against tricky Thailand tomorrow

ABU DHABI, UAE: Back in the continental competition after 2011, India will be hoping to start their campaign against Thailand in their Group A match at the AFC Asian Cup on a positive note on Sunday.

Iran and Bahrain are the other sides in the group.

"The players are really looking forward to the opening match. We can't wait for the game to kick-off. It's time for the show,” said India coach Stephen Constantine at the pre-match Press conference here on Saturday. “We have a young side and wish they perform to their abilities."

This is India’s fourth participation in the competition while Thailand's best result in the continental championship came in 1972 when they finished third.

India, whose best performance was a second-place finish at the 1964 edition, played 18 matches, most by any team, to qualify for the Asian Cup.

"Thailand are a very technical team and they have got a number of good players. We have seen Thailand and are ready for them. There are no easy games for us and we are taking one game at a time. We'll do our best to get the result that we need,” said Constantine.

He also hoped the local fans will come in huge numbers to support Team India.

"We need them to support our team. It's not every day you go and see the Indian National Team play in the Asian Cup," added the Englishman.
