Indian girls beat Bangladesh to win U15 SAFF Championship

NEW DELHI: India defeated defending champions Bangladesh 1-0 to win the SAFF U15 Girls Football Championship after in Thimphu, Bhutan, on Saturday.

Sunita Munda’s scored the all-important goal in the 67th minute.

“I can’t ever describe this moment. We are champions. We had promised that we would be backing each other and fight for our country,” said Sunita. “The tournament has been an eye-opener for all of us. We want to better ourselves in the future.”

Bembem Devi, former India captain and currently the assistant coach praised the girls.

“As a player, I have been fortunate enough to win medals but winning this title as a coach is far more satisfying. The maturity of these girls on and field the field was inspiring,” said Bembem.

India kicked off on a positive note and came close to scoring in second minute, but Avika Singh’s free-kick rattled the bar and off the rebound, Shilky Devi’s header went inches wide.

Three minutes later, Sunita also lost control when she had onky the goalkeeper to beat.

“We have worked hard for this success. The girls deserved this,” said coach Firmin D’Souza. “It’s hard to express how happy I am to get this trophy back home.”
