Indian women kick off campaign with 1-0 win over Iran

BHUBANESWAR: India started their Gold Cup campaign on a winning note when they beat Iran 1-0 at the Kalinga Stadium here on Saturday.

Anju Tamang scored the all-important goal in the 48th minute. It was India’s five wins-in-a-row having won the last four friendlies against Hong Kong and Indonesia respectively.

The hosts had their first chance in the second minute itself when Dangmei Grace’s shot was cleared away by Iran goalkeeper.

Iran tried to make some inroads, but met with little success as the Indian back-line were up to their mark.

Anju showed some great skill after she cut in and put through Ratanbala Devi, who shot wide.

In the tournament’s opening match, Myanmar recorded a 3-0 victory against Nepal with Khin Moe Wai grabbed a brace while Win Theingi Tun was the other scorer. (Pic credit: AIFF/twitter)
