India’s Ghosal gets a bye; El Shorbagy leads the pack in Doha

DOHA, Qatar: Egypt’s world No.1 and defending champion Mohammed El Shorbagy will lead a pack of top players including some of the world’s top 20 at the 16th Qatar Classic Squash Tournament.

The tournament, which offers a total cash prize of $177,750 and trophy, will be held at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex from October 27 to November 2.

But France’s former world No.1 Gregory Gaultier will not feature due to a surgery following a knee injury.

Gaultier, who won the Qatar Classic in 2011, sustained an injury in his quarterfinal match against Egypt’s world No.2 Ali Farag earlier this month in US Open.

The Frenchman is replaced by Peru’s world No.13 Diego Elias, who received a bye into round two while world No.11 was also handed a bye.

El Shorbagy won the tournament for the third time last year after a 3-1 win over compatriot Tarek Momen.

Besides the Egyptian, the fans will have an opportunity to witness Farag, Simon Rosner and Miguel Angel Rodriguez among others.

Qatari champion Abdulla Mohammad Al Tamimi will compete with a wild card while Syed Azlan Amjad and Abdulrahman Al Malki will feature in the main draw for the first time.

As a PSA World Tour Platinum tournament, the winner of the event will automatically qualify for a coveted berth at the season-ending PSA World Tour Finals.

“There’s a huge expectation this year considering the presence of star players. We are delighted to play host to such a strong field. Fans are set for a week-long feast of great games,” says Tournament Director Tareq Zainal.
