Injury-time goal helps Aussies knock-out Syria 3-2

AL AIN, UAE: Defending champions Australia advanced into the knockout stage with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Syria here at the Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium on Tuesday.

Tom Rogic struck the all-important goal in the injury-time to help the Socceroos stay in the hunt for top honour.

The Celtic midfielder struck from 25 yards to beat the west Asians, who looked set to secure a point under new coach Fajr Ebrahim.

But the Syrians bowed out from Group B after finishing at the bottom after Palestine picked up an important point against Jordan from their goalless draw game.

Syria was all set to earn a draw after twice coming from behind to level, with Omar Khrbin cancelling out Awer Mabil’s opener and Omar Al Soma converting from the spot after Chris Ikonomidis had put Australia back in front. (Pic credit: AFC/Twitter)
