It’s not divided loyalty, but Griezmann is in love with Uruguay

It’s not divided loyalty, but Griezmann is in love with Uruguay

MOSCOW: France will be playing against Uruguay in what appears to be an exciting quarterfinal on Friday, but striker Antoine Griezmann possess a soft corner for the Latin Americans.

Griezmann describes Uruguay as his second country.

“I’m very emotional about them qualifying because I love the country and people,” Griezmann told FIFA.com. “I’ve got a lot of friends there. It’s going to be a great game and an emotional experience also.”

France defeated Argentina 4-3 in a nerve-wracking match, where Griezmann had given them the lead. But at one point it looked like the Latin Americans would win after taking a 2-1 lead.

More than his team’s victory, Griezmann marvelled at Uruguay’s defeat of Portugal in another Round of 16 clash.

The 27-year-old’s love-affair with the country of three million started at Real Sociedad, who were coached by Martin Lasarte. Thrown in at the deep end by the Uruguayan, Griezmann was taken under the wings of another Charrua, team-mate Carlos Bueno.

Griezmann loves Uruguay and their clubs and, in fact, he never misses a match and knows all the fans’ songs.

The Frenchman appreciates the playing style of nation that won their first and last World Cup in 1930.

“They’re very tough at the back and lethal up front. To my mind, Edinson Cavani is the best striker. He works for the team. He’s always calling for the ball, and he never gives up on anything. And when he’s in the box, he just needs a touch or two to get a shot off,” Griezmann added.
