PHNOM Penh, Cambodia: Japan star Keisuke Honda has been appointed as the head coach and general manager of the Cambodia national team.

Football Federation of Cambodia President General Sao Sokha said on Sunday that the Melbourne Victory player will chart the national team's fortunes in the 2018 AFF Cup.

Honda's appointment comes just days after he signed with reigning A-League champions Melbourne Victory for the 2018-19 season.

Media reports stated that Honda will continue his playing career in the A-League, but will chart Cambodia’s international future by guiding his coaching staff through weekly video calls.

Honda, who announced his retirement from international football after the 2018 World Cup, shot to fame at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when his goals helped Japan reach the Round of 16. (Pic credit: afc)
