Japan take on Uruguay in Kirin Cup tomorrow

SAITAMA, Japan: Japan will be riding on their impressive form following victories against Costa Rica and Panama when they take on South American giants Uruguay here on Tuesday.

Japan, riding a wave since making the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Round of 16, defeated Costa Rica 3-0 last month and flexed their muscles against Panamaas they registered a similar score on Friday with Takumi Minamino and Junya Ito finding the net on both occasions.

World No. 5 Uruguay will pose a stiffer challenge, but Hajime Moriyasu’s Samurai Blue are unlikely to be fazed as they buildup to what they hope will be a fifth AFC Asian Cup.

Uruguay, led by Edison Cavani and Christian Stuani in the absence of Luis Suarez, will be looking to bounce back after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against South Korea.

History favours the South Americans as they came out tops in three previous friendlies (2008, 2013 and 2014) which took place on Japanese soil.

Japan have friendlies against Venezuela and Kyrgyz Republic next month before they embark on their AFC Asian Cup 2019 UAE campaign in January.

They will play in Group F with Uzbekistan, Oman and Turkmenistan in the January 5-February 1 showpiece. (Source: the-afc.com)
