Jobby Justin deserves to play for India, says Menendez

KOLKATA: East Bengal coach Alejandro Menendez seemed delighted after his side defeated Mohun Bagan and picked up three important points in the I-League on Sunday.

“Now, my team is improving with every win. The difference between the two derbies was that we played really well today and closed out the match. It was something different from the last time we played against Bagan,” said Menendez.

But he reserved his praise for Jobby Justin, who was outstanding against the Mariners.

The 25-year-old Kerala-born player scored the second, and also assisted in his team’s opening goal.

“I think that Jobby is progressing well with every match. It’s not only because he’s scoring, he’s also working on his complete game. He’s playing very well. He’s a more complete player than he was last season. If he continues to play like this, he’ll deserve to play in the national team,” said the Spaniard.

The victory has brightened East Bengal’s title hopes, but the 52-year-old said that it’s still a long way to go.

“The important thing is that many teams are fighting for the title. There’re still a couple of games left and there will be upsets and setbacks, but the team which will perform consistently will win the crown,” added Menendez. “After this victory, we believe we can win the title.”

Sony Norde, who was tipped as Bagan’s trump card in this match, had a good game but that wasn’t enough to bolster the team.

“We didn’t do anything special to stop Sony (Norde). We prepared well to stop the team as they’ve a special style. Whenever Sony had the ball, we wanted to mark him. That’s what we did,” he said.
