Khalid Jamil makes winning debut as Mohun Bagan coach

KOLKATA: Newly-appointed Mohun Bagan coach Khalid Jamil got off to a winning start after The Mariners edged past defending champions Minerva Punjab 2-0 in front of a sizeable audience here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday.

Omar Nabil Rashad El Husseiny converted from the spot in the 30th minute after Dipanda Dicka was brought down inside the box by Lancine Tourse while the Cameroonian international added the second in the 69th.

Jamil made five changes, bringing in Dipanda, Azharuddin Mallick, Darren Caldeira, Gurjinder Kumar and Dalraj Singh in place of Henry Kisekka, Lalramzauva Khiangte, Souvik Das, Lalchawnkima and Arijit Bagui.

Bagan dominated right from the word go, but had to wait for some time for their first goal.

With Yuta Kinowaki and captain Sony Norde leading the attack, Bagan was able to put pressure on the Punjab side who conceded a penalty when Dipanda was brought down inside the box by Lancine Tourse.

Egyptian international Omar Nabil Rashad El Husseiny did not make any mistake from the spot.

The home side restarted the second half with Jamil brought in Sheikh Faiaz in place of Azharuddin Mallick to pile more pressure on the defending champions.

The double changes paid dividends when Dicka found the back of the net after Norde put him through.

The green and maroon now have 18 points from 12 matches while Punjab remained at seventh with 13 points.
