Kings Cup: India kick-off new journey under Stimac

KOLKATA, India: Indian football will start their campaign against Curacao at the 2019 Kings Cup in Buriram (Thailand) under their new coach Igor Stimac tomorrow.

The match kicks-off at IST 2pm at the Chang Arena in Buriram.

It will be their first match since Stephen Constantine and AIFF parted ways in January following India's exit from the group stage at the AFC Asian Cup in UAE.

"We can feel the excitement. The players are excited. I sincerely hope they will enjoy the football we will play," said Stimac, who joined the national team last month, told the AIFF website. "Curacao players are experienced with a number of players playing in Europe. Technically, they are of a higher class than us on an individual basis."
The Croat selected a 23-member squad after a gruelling preparatory camp in Delhi.

"The camaraderie between the players is really good. I'm glad to see the boys gelling well, pushing each other to get better, and inculcating a number of good habits," said striker Sunil Chhetri.

A total of six players made the cut for the first time.

"I see a lot of desire among the new boys. Who knows, a few boys could start for the senior team against Curacao. It will be a huge moment for them. I wish them all the luck and really hope they do well," he added.
Chhetri will also become India's highest cap-winner of all-time when he takes the pitch against 82 ranked Curacao, a Dutch Caribbean island.

"It's an important game for Sunil. I am sure all players will put in an extra effort into the game to make it an unforgettable one for him. Hopefully we can get a positive result," said Stimac.
