Kuruniyan, Chhangte score as India beat Lanka in SAFF Cup

NEW DELHI: India started their SAFF Cup campaign on a positive note with a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka in a Group B match in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on Wednesday.

Ashique Kuruniyan (35th minunte) and Lalianzuala Chhangte (47') scored a goal in each half to help the defending champions return with full points.

India started the game on a high tempo and Kuruniyan showed his intention within two minutes of the match when he latched the first attack.

India, who fielded their U23 side in the competition, shot into the lead when Kuruniyan sped past his marker and slotted home for his maiden goal in international competition.

The Indians came close to doubling the lead, but Chhangte's missed the mark.

After the breather, Chhangte's cross from the left beat Sri Lankan goalkeeper to give India a 2-0 lead.

India take on Maldives in their next match on Sunday.
