Minerva Punjab start 2019 AFC Champions League campaign in play-off

NEW DELHI: India’s Minerva Punjab will start their campaign at the 2019 AFC Champions League in the play-off against Iran’s Saipa on February 12.

Following the draw ceremony on Thursday, Asia’s premier club football competition, which features 32 teams, is split into two geographic zones, East and West, until the final.

It means that the group stage is full of regional rivalries.

The toughest group puts the champions of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates together as Al Hilal, Al Duhail and Al Ain meet. Additionally, Al Sadd of Qatar, winners in 2011, have been drawn with Saudi Arabia's Al Ahli.

Meanwhile, reigning Qatar Stars League champions have been drawn into Group C alongside Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Al Ain (UAE) and Esteghlal (Iran).

Two-time AFC Champions League champions Sadd are in Group D with Iran’s Persepolis and Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli. Play-off 1 winners will be the fourth side.
