Minerva beat Churchill 1-0 to emerge I-League champions

CHANDIGARH, India: William Opoku scored the all-important goal to help Minerva Punjab win their maiden I-League title after they beat Churchill Brothers 1-0 at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium here on Thursday.

The Punjab side accumulated 35 points from 18 games to be crowned India’s champions while Neroca (32), Mohun Bagan (31) and East Bengal (31) drew their matches on the last day’s action.

Minverva, who will now represent India at the 2019 AFC Champions League preliminary play-offs, became the first side from Punjab to win the league in 21 years since JCT’s title victory in 1996-97.

Meanwhile, Bagan were held to a 1-1 draw by Gokulam Kerala away while Dudu Omagbemi’s 73rd equaliser helped East Bengal avert defeat against Neroca, who shot ahead in the 42nd through Felix Chidi.
